MEET THE HOST FARM

PROVIDENCE DAIRY

Meet the owners of Providence Dairy in White, South Dakota – Sako and Wiekie Vandermeer’s! They moved from the Netherlands in 1995 to a dairy farm in Oregon, where they worked for 9 years. In 2004, they moved to South Dakota and started with 600 cows and they now milk 1500 cows twice a day in a double 16 parallel parlor. All the barns at Providence Dairy are equipped with waterbeds covered with wood shavings, and have automatic manure scrapers. They also plant 900 acres of corn, 200 acres of soybean and 2 quarters of rye each year. All calves are born at the home farm in White, and then at about a week old they are transferred to Syracuse, KS for about half a year. From there, the come back to the Midwest to be raised in Edgerton, MN until they return back home where they are ready to have their calf.

SDSU DAVIS DAIRY PLANT!

South Dakota State University has offered Dairy Science programs since the beginnings of the university and its dairy plant has been the basis of its teaching and research programs. In 2011 SDSU was excited to open its doors to the state-of-the-art Davis Dairy Plant. This $9.3 million facility was made possible through funds from the dairy industry, dairy farmers, alumni and friends and includes a renovation of the old plant and 10,000 square feet addition. This plant is designed to offer hands-on experience to Dairy and Food Science students at SDSU.
